How to create a WiFi network on board ?

Is is necessary if you want to use the network capabilities of GpsGate to give access to NMEA data to any device on board (PC, Smartphone, tablet, etc.).
The actual question is how to install a TCP/IP router on board.

  • Use a hardware router as in your home. Require to be set-up. It will use some electricity but not that much. It’s my first choice using a Mercursys MR20 AC750
  • Use the hotspot function of your Smartphone. It is the easiest solution. It can be disconnected from the Internet. If it is connected to the Internet, other devices will have access to the world (PC, Smartphone, iPhone, tablet, etc.)
  • Use the PC / Window 11. You can use the PC as Mobile hotspot (See Network & Internet setting)
  • Use the PC / Window 7-10. Some software allow to convert the PC into a hotspot. Some are useless in our case because they require an Internet connection (the reason why they are developed is mainly to give access to the Internet). Others can be use to create a WiFi network on board (and eventually give access to the Internet). I tested the following :

MyPublicWiFi : Freeware. Windows 7 to 10. A bit slow to start, but does the job.
Connectify Hotspot : Windows 7 to 10. Free version (trial), about 20€ lifetime license for 1 PC (other plans available).
Virtual WiFi (OpenSource. I liked it under Window 7 but it does not start under Windows 10 without getting gray hairs).

I did not successfully tested the followings : MaryFi, mHotspot, VirtualRouterInstaller, Bzeek (too old), VirtualRouter Plus (too old).
